Apparently, it's National Passion Fruit Day. Who knew? The passion flower is really special to us, and here's a story from Carol:

My father passed away in March 1978. The last five years of his life, he was sick and took up gardening...it brought him joy. The one thing he tried every year to grow, and had very little success, was the passion flower. Try as he may, it never bloomed while he was alive. The first bloom came effortlessly, the summer after he died. That flower grew stronger every year, making all of us feel that Dad was still there with us.

Over the years, the passion flower plant stopped thriving, and was almost gone. Mom took one last cutting in 2004 and gave it to Chris & I right after we got married. We kept it in a vase to root all year, and then we planted it on our first anniversary. I’ve never been able to grow anything, so I was completely shocked when it started to grow. The first flower bloomed that next year, exactly on our second anniversary.

Every year, it’s gotten healthier and stronger. When we lived in Skokie, it literally grew up to the top level of our home and came through the screen of my office window. Every time mom came to visit, it was the first thing she wanted to see. When we moved to our new home, I took a small root and started it all over again.

In 2018, mom moved to assisted living. With the covid lockdown in 2020, we were unable to visit with her for five long months. When they started allowing weekly visits, I went to see her and took the one thing that I knew she'd like - a single stem of this flower in a bud vase. She was delighted.

Mom transitioned last year, 44 years after dad left this earth. They are together once again. The passion flower grows stronger at our home, and I do absolutely nothing. Remember, I have zero green thumbs!

Every time I go outside and see these flowers, I smile and know that my parents are with me. The most precious gift ️
